About River Bluff Gardens

Why we formed Riverbluff Gardens, Ltd.

Twelve years ago, my mother began landscaping her yard in Massachusetts with a large number of tulip bulbs, each year, for a spring display that was magnificent. A chance conversation, in 1996, between my mother and another gardening enthusiast, early one Sunday morning while standing in line at a Starbucks Coffee Shop, changed my mother’s life forever. And, I might add, my family’s life, as well.

The gardening enthusiast asked my Mom if she had visited the daylily farm about an hour and a half away. No, my Mom replied, but why not, it was a beautiful day for a drive!

Arriving just at opening time, Mom parked the car, got out and looked around. It was an epiphany! Daylilies of every imaginable color were in full bloom (mind you, my Mom thought all daylilies were yellow and orange) and the die was cast. She purchased the first of several carloads, daylily fever unabated.

Hosta now, was another story; Mom always held Hosta in disdain, as the only Hosta she’d seen were the rather uninteresting forty-year-old varieties, used sparingly as landscaping in the Northeast. Walking through the shade garden at the daylily farm, she found beautiful beds of foliage plants, many multicolored, green with white or cream and fascinating leaf shapes. Asking an employee what these plants were, she was told, that is Hosta. My Mom replied, in amazement, you’re joking! And another love affair began.

It is from this that my wife Jane and I found our interest in daylilies and hosta. We have always enjoyed taking the time and making the effort to cultivate beautiful plants, which have made gardening such a joy. Our two favorite landscaping plants are hosta and daylilies. With this in mind, we hope to share our enthusiasm with you by offering for sale the finest quality, unique varieties and the largest, hardiest, lush hosta and daylilies that can be found.

My wife Jane, a native of Johannesburg, South Africa and I moved to Kansas in 1995. Riverbluff Gardens, Ltd. is a family owned business. We live on the farm, which has been in our family since 1880. The farm situated on a bluff, overlooks the Marais des Cygnes River, hence the name Riverbluff.

Happy gardening!

Jane and Lance Beuttel
